
Morigaon The Morigaon district of Assam caused an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude on the Richter scale in the early hours of Thursday. The National Center for Ces’sS (NCS) gave this information. The National Center for Sisamology (NCS) said the earthquake came at 2:25 pm on Thursday night and its center was at a depth of 16 km. Earlier on Tuesday, there was an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale in the Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Tuesday.
Shocks felt in Guwahati and other parts of the state
Earthquake tremors were felt in Guwahati and other parts of the state. Earthquakes with 5.0 intensity are considered moderate, which is likely to shake the objects inside the house, the sound of rattle and minor damage. Earthquakes are quite common in Assam as this state is one of the most earthquake-prone areas of India.
Rang of strong earthquake in Assam
This seismic region falls under V, which means that there is a high risk of sharp tremors. Over the years, some major earthquakes have been observed in the region, such as Assam-Tibeta earthquake (8.6 intensity) and 1897 Shillong Earthquake (8.1 intensity)-both are one of the strongest earthquakes in history.
This came a few days after the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in the Bay of Bengal, which were felt in many parts of Kolkata and West Bengal. NCS reported that the earthquake occurred on February 25 at 6:10 am. An India Meteorological Department official told the media that the earthquake was registered near Puri in Odisha.
The official said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 91 km in the Bay of Bengal. Although earthquake tremors caused momentary panic among the residents of Kolkata, no immediate report of damage or casualties has been revealed.
