The apex court took cognizance of the right to health and the petition raising the issue of risk for the residents of the surrounding areas including the city of Indore. On the night of two-three December 1984, a highly poisonous gas methyl isocyanate was leaked from the Union Carbide Factory. It is considered one of the most terrible industrial disasters in the world.

People worried about garbage disposal in Pithampur
The bench of Justice BR Gawai and Uesstein George Christ agreed to hear the petition challenging the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on December 3, 2024 and January 6, 2025. Petitioner Chinmay Mishra has said in a petition filed in the apex court through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare that he is concerned with the decision of officials for disposal of 337 tonnes of dangerous chemical waste in Pithampur.

At least four-five villages are located in a radius of one kilometer from the disposal site. The lives and health of the residents of these villages are at high risk. It is appropriate to mention that the ‘Gambhir river flows from the industrial area and provides water to the’ Yashwant Sagar Dam ‘.
