Aurangzeb destroyed while Bahadur Shah Zafar was Kayal
Today’s Ramlila Maidan of Delhi was able to take shape completely during the reign of the last Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar, but this place was used for religious events like Ramlila during the reign of Aurangzeb. The number of Hindu army in Aurangzeb’s army used to decrease, while by the time of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the number of Hindu soldiers had become good. Ramlila Maidan continued to be destroyed again and again due to Aurangzeb’s cruelty. People used to celebrate Ramlila by hiding.
Later, when a grand Ramlila started getting at this place, Bahadur Shah Zafar himself also became convinced. During his procession, he used to see this ground from a distance. It is said that he liked the brightness and openness here. He considered it a place of glory. That is, in the last phase of Bahadur Shah Zafar’s rule, this place was known as Ramlila Maidan. Earlier this place was called the pond of the township
Ramlila Maidan in the country’s capital Delhi is adjacent to Ajmeri Gate. It is spread over 10 acres. Earlier there used to be a big pond here, there used to be dense settlements around before. Hindu soldiers of the Mughal army used to celebrate Ramlila and other religious celebrations. Gradually, as its use increased, people filled the pond. Due to being a pond, this place was called the pond of the first township.
Then, by the time the British rule, this place was completely leveled around 1850. Later, the British started using this place for their cantonment. Despite this, Ramlila continued here every year. Now this place may be used only once a year for Ramlila, but this place is always buzzing with political arrogance.
Use of Ramlila Maidan changed after independence
The history of Ramlila Maidan in Delhi is unique in many cases. Its foundation may be for religious events, but today this place has become the biggest base of political movements. However, every year Ramlila is also organized here in a very grand way. People come from far and wide to see it. But even during the freedom movement, this place became the base of the struggle of freedom fighters. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel have burnt the bugle of independence from this ground.
In 1945, Mohammad Ali Jinnah was given the title of Maulana here. In 1952, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee performed Satyagraha for Jammu and Kashmir at this place. Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri addressed the countrymen from here in 1965 after defeating Pakistan.
Munadi and oath of change from Ramlila Maidan
After the sixties, Ramlila Maidan in Delhi became one of the most special places to agitate for change of power. In 1975, JP i.e. Jayaprakash Narayan raised the slogan of the entire revolution against corruption, which was seen all over the country. Troubled by slogans and agitation, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had to declare the national emergency in the country. After this, when in 1977, when the emergency was removed and the first non-Congress government was formed at the center, Jai Prakash Narayan once again addressed the countrymen from here.
After this, Ramlila Maidan was also selected for the India Against Corruption Movement against the UPA government. Samaj Sevi Anna Hazare fasted for the Jan Lokpal bill. At the time of this fast and agitation, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was as well as Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, Kiran Bedi, Kumar Vishwas and Manish Sisodia. The grounds of Bharat Mata Ki Jai were resonating day and night against corruption. The Aam Aadmi Party was born with the womb of this movement. In 2013, Delhi changed power in 2014. On getting power to AAP, Arvind Kejriwal took the oath of Chief Minister at this Ramlila Maidan.
Yoga guru Swami Ramdev has also agitated against black money at this Ramlila Maidan, while the India alliance of opposition parties against the ruling BJP government at the center also called a huge rally here before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Now the BJP has given a new message by choosing this place for the oath of the new Chief Minister of Delhi. The BJP wants to present the picture of Ramlila Maidan as a new wave of change and development in the country.
