Naziha Salim was born in Istanbul in 1927 to Mosul-born Iraqi parents. His father was an officer in the Ottoman army stationed in Turkey when he was born. When Naziha was a small child, the family returned to Baghdad in the 1920s.
She was the first woman to receive a scholarship to study art in another country.
She was a founding member of Al-Ruwad (also known as the “Avante Garde or Primitive Group”), a group of Iraqi artists who aimed to blend current European art techniques into a distinct Iraqi style. Later generations of Iraqi artists were greatly influenced by the ensemble.
