Bhopal. 337 tonnes of toxic waste from Bhopal-based Union Carbide factory will be buried in Pithampur. A total of Rs 126 crore will be spent on this. The waste has to be delivered to Pithampur before January 6. Meanwhile, gas affected organizations have once again demanded handing over this waste to Dow Chemical. Organizations say that if the garbage reaches Pithampur, it will pollute the groundwater there.
Rachna Dhingra of Bhopal Group for Information and Action said that the hazardous waste coming out of Bhopal has to be burnt for 3 and a half months. The number of people who have been exposed to poison and particulate matter from the smoke coming out of incinerators for such a long time is more than one lakh. The work currently underway is nothing short of deliberately creating a public health disaster. He said that a total of 337 tonnes of waste has to be removed from the Yucca factory. This, in turn, will increase three times in Pithampur, which will be extremely toxic and will pollute the entire Pithampur and surrounding ground water. At present, garbage is buried at 21 places in the factory located in Bhopal. At the same time, there are thousands of tons of garbage outside too. Due to which the groundwater of 42 settlements is affected. Those responsible should stop the polluted groundwater. Balkrishna Namdev of Gas Victims Organization also told about the damage caused by toxic waste in Pithampur.
Toxic waste will pollute the groundwater of Pithampur
Rashida B, President of Bhopal Gas Victims Women Stationary Employees Union, said that toxic leakage has been going on from the safe land fill in Pithampur for the last few years. Authorities have no way of ensuring that the poison released from the 900 tonnes of residue does not pollute the groundwater in and around Pithampur. Nawab Khan of Bhopal Gas Victim Mahila-Purush Sangharsh Morcha said that in previous years, Jayant Malaiya as Environment Minister and Babulal Gaur as Gas Relief Minister had opposed the plan of burning Bhopal’s waste in Pithampur in many government meetings. Had done. The Gas Relief Commissioner had even filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court against burning of waste in Pithampur. That’s why we are bringing these facts in front of everyone now. So that the officials engaged in the process of turning Pithampur into a slow-moving Bhopal accident cannot say later that they were not aware of it.
