Modi government’s response on the increase in the salary of dignitaries: The increase was due to inflation

New Delhi. When questions were raised on the increase in the salary of MPs, the Modi government has clarified the matter. The Modi government has said that the salary increase has happened due to inflation. This has happened according to the 2018 policy. This policy has a rule to link the salary with inflation. According to sources, the central government says that the rule made in 2018 is correct and completely transparent. Due to this rule, the salary cannot be increased arbitrarily and caution is taken in financial matters. Actually, the Finance Act 2018 made changes in the Salary, Allowances and Pension Act 1954 of MPs. After the change, the salary of MPs was linked with inflation. After the
changes made in the year 2018, the Cost Inflation Index (CII) published under the Income Tax Act, 1961 is used. According to sources, before this change, the salary increase used to happen suddenly. Every time approval had to be taken from the Parliament. Then the reason given behind the change was to make the process non-political and to create a mechanism for salary adjustment. Before 2018, the last change in salary was in 2010. Then the Parliament passed a bill to increase the monthly salary of MPs from 16 thousand to 50 thousand rupees. This decision was criticized by the people a lot. Then people said that MPs are paying themselves 3 times the salary.
However, some leaders had demanded to increase the salary by 5 times. This included Mulayam Singh Yadav and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Many leaders including Mulayam and Lalu said that inflation has increased a lot, so the salary should also increase. Now the government believes that the rule made in 2018 is the best. This increases the salary automatically.
