Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a big gift to Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, 12 January. PM Modi has inaugurated 11 new medical colleges in the state through video conferencing. Along with this he also inaugurated a new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) in the state.
The new medical colleges have been opened in Virudhunagar, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Tiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri districts of the state with a total capacity of 1,450 seats. The admission process will start soon. These new medical colleges have been set up at an estimated cost of about Rs 4,000 crore, of which about Rs 2,145 crore is provided by the central government and the rest by the Tamil Nadu government.
The government had earlier said that the setting up of these medical colleges is in line with the Prime Minister’s constant endeavor to promote affordable medical education and improve health infrastructure in all parts of the country.
More than 1.5 crore people will be benefitted
The new colleges have been established under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of setting up new Medical Colleges attached to the existing District/ Referral Hospitals. More than 1.5 crore people in these districts and adjoining areas will be benefitted by the new initiative. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya were present at the event for the inauguration.
CICT’s new campus is built in 24 crores
The Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), which was till now operating from a rented building in Chennai, will now operate from a new three-storey campus. The new campus of CICT is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to protect and preserve Indian heritage and promote classical languages. The complex is fully funded by the central government and built at a cost of Rs 24 crore.
Equipped with e-library, seminar hall and a multimedia hall
The new campus is equipped with a huge library, an e-library, seminar hall and a multimedia hall. The library of the institute has a rich collection of more than 45,000 ancient Tamil books. It aims to translate and publish ‘Thirukkural’ in various Indian as well as 100 foreign languages.
