
In North India, the feeling of heat has started soon in February this year. This is going to be one of the hottest February months of the last 15 years. This indicates the early end of winter in North India. Meanwhile, the question is bound to come in the minds of the people whether we will have to face long and hard heat this year? The answer is ‘not necessarily’. In fact, the data of previous years shows that heat in February does not mean that there will be severe heat in North India.
The hottest month analysis of 10 years
Since 1971, the monthly average maximum temperature of North India was analyzed. It was selected on the 10 most hot months of February. In five years of these, the month of April was hotter than normal. But in the remaining five years, the temperature of April remained either close to normal (four years) or below normal (one year). March is generally considered the month of seasonal change. There is no direct connection in the temperature of February and April. The temperature of these two months depends on many factors. These include major events like El Nino (or La Nina) and meteorological events like Western disturbance.
No relationship between February and April temperatures
Recent years of trends prove that there is no relation in the temperature of February and April. North India had a record heat in February 2023, but April was cold from normal. The hottest of 2023 was the hottest since February 1901, the average maximum temperature of 3.5 degrees above the average of 1971–2024. However, April was the coldest in eight years that year, the average maximum temperature was about 1 degree below an average of 1971–2024. The contrary happened in 2022. The April was the hottest at a record level in North India that year, while the temperature in February was close to normal.
